Live, Work & Play
In Gates County

Before the settlement by the Europeans, many Indian tribes made their homes here. It is not uncommon to find traces of these people left behind in the county. Arrowheads and pottery shards are often found in open fields and along riverbanks.

In the early years of settlement, pioneers attempted to make a living off of land that was riddled with swamps and sandy soil that would not produce.

The landscape made many pass by to areas further south where land was richer and had fewer wetlands. Those who stayed behind were a strong and resourceful lot. The descendants of many of those persevering and strong founders still call the county home today.

From 1728 through 1780, the area grew from a thick, wooded and inhospitable land to an agrarian community with many of the same resources that surrounding regions had. The main commerce was in hogs, tar (pine pitch) and timber from the thick virgin forests.

In 1779, the area was separated into a county all its own. The physical barriers of swamps or rivers made it difficult for residents to travel to government seats in bad weather and it was for this reason, among others, that Gates County became an entity of its own.

Gates County was named for General Horatio Gates, a Revolutionary War hero. As commanding general at the Battle of Saratoga in 1777, he delivered one of the most damaging blows yet felt by English forces in the war.

In 1780, a courthouse, prison and stocks were built in, what was known at the time as, Gates Court House. The 1830-1831 Legislature passed an act, which changed the name of the county seat to Gatesville. In 1836, the Federal-style courthouse was built, which now houses the Gates County Public Library and Gates County Historical Society.

We receive 49 inches of rain per year and 4 inches of snowfall. The number of days with any measurable precipitation is 103. On average, there are 214 sunny days annually. The July high is around 89 degrees. The January low is 29.

North Carolina is blessed with beautiful beaches, majestic mountains plus countless rivers and streams in between.

The remarkable surroundings of Merchants Millpond State Park lend themselves to a variety of activities. Drift in a canoe along the smooth, dark surface of the millpond. Savor the sights and sounds that come alive in the stillness of the forest. Journey into remote and undisturbed Lassiter Swamp, a place that embodies the spirit of adventure. If canoeing is not for you, fish for game species. Choose from an assortment of camping opportunities or enjoy a picnic beside the millpond.

Cross the historic Dismal Swamp Canal and walk along the 300-foot boardwalk into this true geological wonder. Experience the lush swamp forest and wide variety of wildlife. There are 16.7 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails to explore. Canoe or kayak down the Dismal Swamp Canal. Learn why George Washington called the Dismal Swamp "a glorious paradise," how the swamp was important in the Underground Railroad and the ecological importance of wetlands in the visitor's center and exhibit hall.

When you come to Gates County, be ready to be greeted on the street and have people that you don't even know wave to you. The pace of life here is slow so don't rush through. Take time to stop and talk to people, have a barbecue sandwich and soda at one of the family restaurants, but don't forget to stop by our United Country offices so we can share more of our little paradise with you. Chances are you'll never want to leave, just like the first people who settled here.
